Gymnastics set for Sporting Schools three-peat
Gymnastics looks set for a three-peat in the Sporting Schools program and on track to be the most requested sport for three consecutive school terms of the Australian Government initiative that kicked off in Term 3 this year.
Gymnastics topped the podium as the program’s most requested sport during the initial two terms of the Sporting Schools program, a position it looks likely to hold onto in Term 1, 2016.
A total of 25,369 participants across 281 separate programs took part in gymnastics through Sporting Schools in Term 4, 2015, with a total of 38,233 participants in 505 different programs taking up gymnastics during the first six months of the Sporting Schools initiative.
This continues to grow with an even greater number of gymnastics programs requested to be run through the Sporting Schools program in 2016. The Semester 1 intake which opened last week has already seen 272 programs requested for 30,502 participants.
Following research released by Victoria University last month, which noted the importance of gymnastics in developing children’s essential fundamental movement skills, it is seemingly now more important than ever to introduce gymnastics as a part of the primary schools’ physical education curriculum. Learning gymnastics through the Sporting Schools program is a great way for children to get a taste for how fun gymnastics can be, before introducing them to the programs on offer at their local club.
