Career Planning Support

Elite Athlete Friendly University

The Elite Athlete Friendly University (EAFU) Network has been established to identify and promote universities who have responded to the specific needs of elite student athletes by developing new, or promoting existing policies and practices which assist elite student athletes to undertake sporting opportunities whilst pursuing and achieving academic excellence.

The value of combining both sport and higher education to achieve greater life success is well recognised across the university and sporting sectors as is recognised within Gymnastics Australia as being an important balance for the wellbeing of the athlete.

There are 41 universities across Australia that are part of the EAFU network. Each of these universities have a contact person to support elite athletes within their university.

The guiding principles of the EAFU include:

  • Provide advice and guidance on academic planning around the athletes training and competition schedule.
  • Assist with applications into universities
  • Assist with negotiating flexibility to meet academic requirements
  • Tailoring academic study loads to integrate sporting commitments
